Vaazhai (Tamil) is a 2024 Indian Tamil language children’s drama film written, co-produced, and directed by Mari Selvaraj. It is produced by Disney+ Hotstar, Navi Studios, and Farmer’s Master Plan Productions. The film features debutantes Ponvel M., Rahul R., Kalaiyarasan, and Nikhila Vimal in pivotal roles, along with J. Starring Satish Kumar, Divya Duraisamy, Karnan Janaki and Nivedita Rajapan. Based on Selvaraj’s life, Sivanaindan works on a banana plantation while going to school; However, he hates working there.

Being Navvi Studio’s first production, the film was officially announced in November 2022 with the title Product No.1, and the official title was announced a few days later. Principal photography began the same month. It was mostly shot in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli and wrapped up in mid-January 2023—music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by Theni Easwar, and editing by Suriya Prathaman.

Banana was released in theaters worldwide on August 23, 2024. Upon its release, it received critical acclaim from critics who praised Mari Selvaraj’s direction and the performances of the lead actors.

Vaazhai: Story

The film “Banana” is set in a rural village in the south, where a boy named Shivanendan balances his time between going to school and working in the banana plantations to support his family. Sivanendan’s resolve is challenged by the harsh realities of rural life and social inequalities as he faces poverty, friendship and the struggles of adolescence.

Vaazhai: Music

Santhosh Narayanan has composed the music for the third time with Mari Selvaraj after Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan. The first single, “Southeast”, was released on 18 July 2024. The second single “Oru Urula Raja” was released on 29 July 2024. The third single “Othda Satti Soru” was released on 5 August 2024. The fourth single, “Badavati”, was released on 10 August 2024. The full soundtrack album was released on 23 August 2024 after the film’s release.

The production house later announced that Think Music had acquired the audio rights to the film.
