Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a 2024 American dark fantasy comedy horror film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by Alfred Gough and Miles Miller. A sequel to Beetlejuice (1988) and the second film in the Beetlejuice franchise, the film stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprising their roles alongside newcomers Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe. Set more than three decades after the first Beetlejuice, it follows Lydia Dietz, now a mother, as she struggles to hold her family together following a loss when a specter called Beetlejuice comes to haunt her.
Following the success of Beetlejuice, its original producers The Geffen Film Company announced plans for a sequel, but it was not until 2011 that Warner Bros. Pictures hired Seth Grahame-Smith to produce a story and several rewrites were abandoned. Late 2019 and finally revived after three years. Burton produced the film in association with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment studio, and the casting process continues into early 2023. Principal photography, overseen by cinematographer Harris Zamberlougos, took place from May to November 2023 in parts of the United Kingdom and the United States, despite being suspended. 2023 for four months due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The official title was released in February 2024. During post-production, editing was handled by Jay Brichytney and the score was composed by long-time collaborator Danny Elfman.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2024, and was released internationally on September 4, 2024, and two days later in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $264 million worldwide against a budget of $99–100 million.

Filming was originally planned to begin in mid-2022. The 2023 WGA strike was then pushed back to the planned start date of May 10, 2023, in London, unless it caused another delay to production. Production was officially confirmed the following day, with Haris Zamberloukos serving as director of photography and Jay Brychitney serving as editor. On May 18, 2023, it was reported that filming was taking place around Princess Helena College in Preston, Hertfordshire, England.
Outdoor filming took place in East Corinth, Vermont (the location of the original film’s outdoor scenes) in mid-2023. Filming was halted in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Burton described the film, which he enjoyed making, as “99% done”. Production was halted with two days remaining when Ortega was contacted to resume filming four days after the strike ended. Filming resumed in Melrose, Massachusetts on November 16, 2023, and concluded in Vermont on November 30, 2023.
Danny Elfman, who composed the music for Beetlejuice, returns for the sequel. The film’s soundtrack incorporated licensed music and included two liner notes from Elfman’s score. A cover of “Tae-O (Banana Boat Song)” was performed by Alfie Davies and the Sylvia Young Theatre School Choir and released on May 23, 2024. The 11-track soundtrack was released on August 30, 2024, by Watertower Music, and a vinyl version will be released by Waxwork Records.
Beetlejuice opened the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2024, in a non-competition time slot at the Sala Grande. The film was released theatrically by Warner Bros. Pictures on September 6, 2024, including screenings in IMAX, 4DX, and ScreenX. Warner Bros. The previous regime had considered releasing the film directly to streaming on Max, but since Warner wasn’t sure about spending $147 million on a sequel to the 1980s Burton film, Burton clashed with the studio over the film’s costs and distribution.
Burton’s demands were met when Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdi took over in 2022, agreeing to a major theatrical release. Of the budget of less than $100 million, Burton reportedly spent $99 million, thus closing the deal.[86] Although most of the production has wrapped, the film was originally thought to be delayed until 2025 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. However, in February 2024, the makers reiterated the release date and revealed the official title. At its presentation at CineEurope 2024, Warner Bros. announced that the film will be released overseas on September 4, 2024, two days before its domestic release.
